“Them Islamics all look the same to me” by Goddard, Clive

“Them Islamics all look the same to me” by Goddard, CliveThis cartoon here clearly shows how the Americans think that Islam is linked to terror and that clearly illustrates most Americans think alike when it comes down to terrorism. This cartoon is powerful at showing how minds of the Americas are united in one way or one particularly direction…

  1. When I looked at this image, it took a second to mentally absorb all of the aspects of the image and the text. I agree that this shows how Americans think that Islam is linked to terrorism and that many Americans think alike when it comes to this issue, but there is more here too that I think the image is trying to convey. These men are agreeing that “them Islamics” look the same, when all the Americans in the cartoon look the same as well. They are being hypocritical and perhaps blinded to the fact that they fit the description of the negative connotation they are placing on people of Middle Eastern descent. Also, the voice in the text of the cartoon comes across as extremely ignorant because “Islamics” is not the correct term for Middle Eastern people who practice Islam. They are called Muslims and Islamic is simply not a word. He also says “them Islamics” rather than “those Islamics,” which would be grammatically correct. The men in the image look hypocritical and ignorant, which in and of itself is rather comical. Another good, thought-provoking image.

  2. I like how MaryClare is offering insight into the analysis of your images. Should you use this image, you might use it to demonstrate exactly what the image represents–our own hypocrisy and ignorance…Be careful when writing your essay, however, not to offend your own readers. How will you make us aware of our own ignorance without offending us? This strategy will be necessary for you to establish an ethos on the page that people will listen to…
